Restaurant Alix is an urban oasis, a glimpse of the pastoral in downtown Ghent, Belgium. Patrons enter the cozy brick building on busy Kortrijksesteenweg, only to discover that the restaurant looks out at a lush garden and small barn. Even better, the garden and barn are available for private events, what chef-owner Alix Aelterman calls “Jardin d’Amis.”
Functionals is a presence indoors and out, with our the T-Tables inside and our the Outdoor Lloyd Tables, Benches, and T-Tables outside.
Aelterman started her namesake restaurant in her family’s longtime home in May of 2015. The restaurant was the natural outgrowth of her love of “bringing people together” and making delicious food. “It just grew organically,” she says.
Open for lunch, brunch, and afternoon tea, Alix offers a menu that changes with the season but is always “homemade with the freshest ingredients,” locally sourced whenever possible. Above all, Aelterman wants her guests to feel “at home, to have fun, to feel welcome.” This philosophy also applies to the Jardin d’Amis, which accommodates events from late April until October.
In terms of a design philosophy, Alix combines urban industrial with rustic chic. The Lloyds and T-Tables, all metal, fit perfectly into this aesthetic. Aelterman first encountered Functionals via Four Rooms, a furniture store in Ghent (and a licensed Functionals reseller). Four Rooms recommended a T-Table for the interior of Alix… and several more followed.
When it was time to outfit Jardin d’Amis, Four Rooms selected Outdoor Lloyd Tables and T-Tables. All are constructed of powder-coated Magnelis® steel, which makes them tough enough to withstand bad weather. The metal also flexes, so all four legs always touch the ground, no matter how uneven the surface.
Aelterman loves the Functionals palette. “The rust color matches Alix’s brick walls, the white is so soft, and the parallel green echoes the plants in the garden.” Together, the colors and the metal set the Functionals furniture apart. “The tables are so different than what you usually see at event spaces. I really feel that they help give Alix a distinctive atmosphere.”
